Process Videos

Greetings! Welcome to my collection of Workshop(ish) process videos. Hours of affordable “how to” pottery techniques viewable on your schedule without the fees, travel & lodging associated with traditional, in person, workshops. Not quite structured lessons, these 2.5-3 hour long videos are more of a “hang” in my Montana pottery studio while I go through all of the steps involved with producing a recent a batch-O-pots, (emphasis on mugs). Access to each video can be purchased through my webshop or by sending $ via Venmo (@vepottery). Please provide a text number or email address at the time of payment and you will receive a password used to “unlock” each video page.

Surface & Decoration (2:48 run time) $35 available now on webshop or Venmo @vepottery
A detailed look at my processes used while making functional pottery. I often forget how much time goes into making this work, but filming and editing these clips served as a reminder about how long I’ve been trying, failing, laughing, cursing, playing, struggling, and sometimes succeeding at this thing called ceramics (worlds most addicting hobby) This video covers all the various steps involved with textured clay and slips, using underglazes for stripes and layered abraded pieces, crackle slip and a few glazing techniques. The beauty of this information being available on video whenever you want, is that you can revisit whenever inspiration strikes. Interested in mixing glazes? I’ve included a few of my most used glazes and slip recipes at the end. Have questions after viewing or want more recipes? Feel free to email or DM with Q’s.

Handles (2:30 run time) $35 available now on webshop or Venmo @vepottery
Like the back rest of a well designed chair, I consider handles to be the most important element of a successful mug. Over the past 35 years of making pottery, I have experimented and tweaked my way into a half dozen handle designs that I am happy with both visually and functionally. In this video, we’ll discuss in detail how, and why, I make these handles. Regardless of how you approach making handles, visual and functional decisions need to be considered. Sometimes one is sacrificed for the other, but the most successful handles are those that achieve a comfortable, visually interesting, balance between the two. If you have questions after viewing… feel free to email or DM with Q’s.

Throwing & Trimming (2:30 run time) $25 available now on webshop or Venmo @vepottery
When I was starting out roughly 40 years ago, throwing production work over the summers really helped me improve my skills at the wheel. I also found it extremely helpful to sit and watch other potters, more skilled than I, do their thing. This video is not a step by step instructional throwing lesson, but more an opportunity to sit in while I do my thing. Every time that I watch another potter on the wheel, I pick up something new, or at least different than how I do things. Some of these moves or techniques may eventually make their way into my own work, others may not… but it’s always exciting to be exposed to new possibilities. I intentionally left this a bit long since you have the controls (seen centering once, why see it again!) feel free to fast forward through segments, I won’t be offended.
